“It’s not just during the development, [procedures and protocols] will be ongoing as well. It will include obviously water quality et cetera, it will be monitored and very strict. I can tell you that the developer is actually a passionate diver, so he has a vested interest to do everything he can to make sure that it’s not just a development, but that it cares for the environment as well which is obviously extremely important.”

The stage one release of the $350 million Shute Harbour Marina Resort has been met by a barrage of interested buyers eager to put their name to one of the 58 land and berth packages up for grabs in one of the world’s most sought-after sailing locations.

The latest deluge of interest has come off the back of the Sanctuary Cove Boat show which accounted for 10% of the enquiries to date, the vast majority coming from boating enthusiasts who were quick to recognise the rarity and value of large-scale berths in the Whitsundays region.

Best-selling author and avid boatie Michael Port once said you can’t buy happiness, but you can buy a boat. He considers boating his happy place and it seems he’s not alone.

According to results from a Boating Industry Association survey, there were more than 920,000 registered boats across the country in the year to June 2021, and one in 10 Aussies had a boat licence – that’s more than 2.5 million.

Perhaps it will be no surprise to hear Queenslanders have the lion’s share with almost one million licences. After all, the sunshine state has more than 6000 kilometres of coastline to explore.
